A holiday at Carcanet Farmhouse provides an outstanding range of options for those that like to get out and about and explore the local area and surrounding region.

The Suisse Normande is an attractive area of hills, rivers and wooded valleys. It offers a wide range of outdoor activities for the energetic, including walking, cycling, climbing, paragliding and canoeing.

There are also a number of excellent golf courses available locally and fishing opportunities, as well as many interesting chateaux and gardens to visit.

It is also an ideal base for exploring the Normandy coast and its diverse attractions. Visit the D-Day landing beaches - Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.

See the Bayeux tapestry - the story of a very different Norman invasion and visit the lovely seaside town of Port en Bessin.

Or perhaps you will like the more sophisticated pleasures that Deauville, Cabourg, Trouville and Honfleur can offer.

Caen is a very interesting place to spend some time boasting the two Abbayes and some exquisite architecture and the superb Caen Memorial Museum which itself is worth at least a half day visit.. The Sunday morning market here is a must for those who like a busy cosmopolitan atmosphere.

There are excellent restaurants within easy reach serving local produce in a style only the French can aspire to and the local cheeses, cider and calvados must be sampled.

Within 10 miles

There is a good golf course at Clecy with practice and hotel facilities and they welcome visitors.

In Thury-Harcourt, 5 miles away, there are bars, restaurants, hotels, shops and supermarkets, banks and medical facilities and the Aquatic park and famous Chateau and gardens are recommended.

St Remy, which is within 3 miles, offers a boulangerie and patisserie, charcuterie and small shops and bars and is ideal for fresh produce in the morning.

In Clecy there are lovely riverside restaurants and bars with boats to hire and Pont-D’Oiully is a very quaint riverside town with scenic views to the gorges in this area and the dramatic Routes des Cretes.

You can take a short walk from Carcanet to the local Reastaurant in Culey Le Patry, which offers 4 course lunches in the week at very reasonable prices.

There are numerous local markets specialising in farm produce and antiquities.

There are numerous walks in the area to suit all the family and you can walk to the forest trails, from the farmhouse, in 5 minutes.

The historical and interesting towns of Caen, Flers, Domfront, Vire and Falaise are all within an hour’s drive and are well worth a visit.

Day Trips

For those who wish to explore further afield, the excellent French autoroutes make this eminently possible.

Monet's garden, the medieval cities of Rouen and Mont St. Michel can all be visited easily in a day. The horse racing at Deauville during August is a revelation.

Brittanny and the Cote Sauvage are only a two hour drive away.
